Mariners holding a valid Class 1 Deck officer CoC i.e Master(F.G.) CoC are eligible for a Equivalent Certificate (Letter of Equivalency) of BSc. Nautical science Degree from Mumbai University.

Go to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Bhavan, a Building within the Campus.After entering the building, turn left on the ground Floor and enter the first room on the right side.
Ask for BSc. Nautical Science Degree Certificate and you will be directed to the person in-charge.
You will be given a form to fill up.

Master (F.G.) CoC (UK CoC also considered)

Update: Copies of all certificates must be attested by class 1 gazetted officer.
Deposit fees before 1430 Hrs as cash collection counter closes at 1430 Hrs.
University Office is open Monday to Friday and also on 1st & 3rd Saturdays.
Its closed on all Sundays, Public Holidays and 2nd & 4th Saturdays.
Also you have to visit the university in person to get this letter. To my knowledge, there is no other procedure available as of now.
You will get the Letter of Equivalence on the same day within 2 to 3 hours from the time of Application.

This Letter has already been successfully used by fellow seafarers for obtaining admission in Post Graduation Courses in various UK universities and also for appearing in UPSC examinations in India that require Graduation.

It took me just 5 minutes to apply for the certificate since i was well prepared with all the documents listed. ReplyDeleteYou can fill any PG program offered by Mumbai university... e.g. MBA, etc. You don't really have to take admission in that program.

I think this should be valid for CE CoC as well but mostly CEs are either Mechanical Engineering Graduates or Marine Engineering Graduates, so why would a Chief engineer need a Certificate of Equivalence when he is already a full time graduate.

The admission guys want to know if there were any announcements/circulars from DG shipping saying that this certificate will be issued to candidates with a masters COC. As far as I understand, Mumbai university conducts BSc Nautical Science course on a regular basis and considering the subjects and quality of studies we have to undergo for the Master's CoC they must have extended the accreditation of the CoC as equivalent of their degree.

DeletePretty difficult for these generation youngsters to pursue career at sea.
I suggest not to force him for sea career as it would be difficult in future esp after marriage etc in which he would regret.
From the DNS degree I presume that there was no one to advice / guide in proper direction.
Still he got time to switch over to some shore job.
Give some time to him and let him decide, be patient.
Things will fall in slot, right now proper guidance is required.

I heard some saying that . We do get an equivalent Msc instead of Bsc. Does this hold good or its just a rumour.

I would like to thank Capt. Gaurav Chaturvedi for the detailed information given to obtain the BSc Nautical equivalency certificate.
ReplyDeleteI would just like to add about the payment of the fees. Once the documents have been verified at Ambedkar Bhavan and a challan form for the fees is issued then proceed to Mahatma Phule Bhavan which is further down the road. Take a visitor pass at the gate and proceed to the 2nd Floor, Room No. 52 where the challan is stamped and signed. Then pay the fees of Rs. 5,000/- in cash on the ground floor at the Bank of Baroda counter. After paying the fees return to Ambedkar Bhavan and submit the documents and fees receipt. You will probably be called after about 2 hours to collect the certificate mainly due to lunch timings. Be polite and the staff will do your work faster.

ReplyDeleteI took the certificate today and below is the procedure I had to follow:
ReplyDelete1) Go to the Ambedkar Bhavan, take left on ground floor and first office on the right is where all the paperwork will be done.
2) Fill out the given form and submit self attested copies of documents- Passport, CDC with seatime pages, COC (UK CoC) also valid, 12th marks card. Also carry original documents for verification.
3) After filling out the form, you will be issued with a challan, go to Mahayana file building where on 2nd floor room 52, they will stamp the challen. In the same building on ground floor pay fees INR 5000, bring cash with you.
4) Take the stamped challan and go back to Ambedkar Bhavan and submit to the same lady
5) You will get your certificate within few hours. I was polite and friendly with all of them and I received my certificate in 1 hour.
Go to the Ambedkar bhavan early as possible, office opens as 10:30.

Visited in Dec 2023. For UK coc they are checking the coc on coc checker for which it’s won’t show up as it’s issued by uk. They instructed me to update the same on dg shipping site. I did the same using e governance but it won’t show up. It’s obvious we have to check the validation of a coc on the respected coc issuing country site. My question is how do we get our uk coc to be attested by dg shipping ??

ReplyDeleteHey Gaurav.. after getting this equivalent degree, I tried to do my law with Bareilly University. It is not accepted considering there is no marksheet/ no migration certificate. Mails to Mumbai university - migration department does not bore any results. as their standard response is that they issue only Equivalent

ReplyDeleteI am residing in Singapore and due to current covid restrictions, the travel to India is restricted and therefore I will not be able to go to Mumbai till the travel restrictions are lifted here in Singapore.
Is there any option to submit the docs and payment through online procedure to obtain the equivalent certificate from Mumbai University due to the current covid situation?
FYI, I have an Indian CoC(Master FG) although it expired a few years back when I stepped ashore and started working here in Singapore and which brings me to my next question if we can obtain the equivalent certificate basis the expired CoC.
